In the current economy, federal, state and local
legislators working towards a balanced budget often
submit proposals to dramatically cut funding for
adult literacy. When this happens, SBLC joins the
local and national adult literacy community in
reminding the relevant lawmakers how literacy
impacts the workforce as well as the health and
safety of our communities. Adult literacy changes
lives, strengthens families and improves
neighborhoods.
The SBLC family — learners, alumni, staff,
instructors, donors, volunteers, directors, advisory
council members, funders and corporate partners —
has emailed, written letters and postcards,
telephoned, and testified before the City Council
and the State Legislature. In the past several
years, the strong support of the adult literacy
community has helped minimize major cuts to
programs.
