Adult Literacy Tutor
Tutors work one-to-one with adults with very low reading abilities. The curriculum is set by each tutor pair, depending on the needs of the learner. The opportunity for one-on-one attention boosts self-confidence for many learners who have had negative experiences in the classroom environment. Tutors must complete 12 hours of training before being paired with a learner. The commitment is a minimum of 2
to 4 hours per week for one year.
Classroom Assistant
SBLC currently offers 20 classes during its Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions. These classes are for individuals working towards attaining their GED or working on
improving basic skills. The number of learners at SBLC increases every year, placing demands on instructors. Classroom assistants work with instructors in lesson planning and implementation. These volunteers
provide small group instruction for learners, as well as offer individual
tutoring to students needing extra help.
The classroom assistant
works with an instructor in a classroom situation 3-6 hours per week for at least
the duration of one class term. Classes range in size from ten to twenty, and in
skill level from approximately grade level 0-4 (ABE), 5-8 (pre-GED), and 9-12 (GED).
Fall (12 weeks), Spring (12 weeks), and Summer (10 weeks) class sessions are
scheduled from September through June during the year.
The volunteer may be doing tasks such
as working one on one with individuals in a class who need extra attention,
facilitating small group work within the classroom, assisting the instructor
with planning parts of lessons, and assisting the instructor in the computer lab. Classroom assistants work closely with the
instructor to whom they are assigned and are responsible for reporting any
difficulties that may arise to the instructor and the tutor coordinator, as well
as reporting the number of volunteer hours at the end of each month.
Career Mentor
Career Mentors are needed to support SBLC's learners with their career exploration goals. Mentors and learners may review the following areas:
-
understanding how life and career goals relate
-
researching the Baltimore job market
-
the ever changing role of technology
-
completing a job application
-
volunteer and internship opportunities
-
resume writing and interview skills
-
work values and attitudes
The relationship that develops between a learner and a mentor is crucial to their success as a team. Mentors are asked to commit at least a semester with their learner. A learner and a mentor should meet once every two weeks to outline and track the learner's career development and progress.
Office Assistant
SBLC is always in need of office assistance. The Office Assistant may be asked to answer phones, take messages, make copies, prepare mailings, file material, distribute flyers and newsletters in the community, run errands, assist with database entry, make phone calls, as well as help with other office needs.
Special Events Volunteer
SBLC needs Special Events Volunteers to help run various events throughout the
year. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, clean up, sell raffle tickets, man booths, distribute flyers, and with other activities as well. Generally, these volunteers contribute at least 2 hours for the event they sign up for.
